Is it safe to have sex if you have a dermoid ovarian cyst? I have a dermoid cyst that I am going to soon have removed. Fortunately, it is benign. I was wondering if it would be okay to still have sex as long as i am not in pain… or would having sex cause this cyst to rupture or have other complications? i have googled this quite a lot and I can’t seem to find an answer.

I have been having a lot of issues with ovarian cysts. In April 2010, I had a bilateral cystectomy. One cyst was removed from each ovary and they were complex dermoid cysts. They were large and painful. I was told to discontinue birth control pills for awhile and let my ovaries “heal and do what they do naturally” (my doctor’s words).
Anyway during 2010, I moved to another state and I decided to see what was going on with my body and make sure that I was still free of cysts. My new doctor put me on birth control pills (low dose) and also ordered an ultrasound. The ultrasound says that the cysts are back (not as big as before though). I am so frustrated. I am willing to do whatever therapies (conventional and unconventional) to get rid of these recurrent cysts. I don’t want to undergo surgery again because it seemed like it didn’t help before. I am waiting on my doctor to refer me to someone and the wait is agonizing. Is there any help for ovarian cysts? The ones they said I have now are not really painful. I was sore after the trans-vaginal ultrasound but the pain is soreness, not major pain like it was the first time that I had this cyst issue.
I am at the end of my rope and willing to consider any and all treatments natural, conventional or otherwise. I would like some advice. I will be choosing a best answer. Thanks in advance for your time. Please help!

The surgeon probably left it there because of the size of the cyst, and possibly the type of cyst.
I had a large cyst that was to be removed laparscopically, and when he went in to do it, he discovered that it was a dermoid cyst. Dermoid cysts are filled with things like hair-gross.
I had to do a laparotomy, because they did not want to run the risk of it rupturing during laparscopic surgery.
I was glad for their caution, because as it turned out, the large cyst I had was a mucinous cyst with borderline malignancy. Had they done the laparscopic, all those pre-cancerous cells would have been flying through my body.
As for whether it likely indicates cancer, that can’t really be answered until they send it to pathology. Cancer is a weird disease, and different for every person. One person may have a tiny cyst that looks to be a normal, functional cyst. If removed, it may be cancer. Another person may have a giant cyst that is nothing at all, but a huge pain. Pathology will biopsy the tissue and determine if there was something there.
And, your other question about the reproductive system, you have two ovaries, and as long as you have one working ovary, you can still get pregnant.

I was diagnosed with somewhat large cysts on both ovaries this summer. One cyst is complex (which means it could be an endometrioma or a dermoid cyst) and the other looks like a large fluid or blood filled cyst but they don’t know for sure.
The doctors are recommending surgery but I don’t want to try surgery as of yet. I am currently on birth control pills to help with cysts and I also am going to try some natural therapies from a licensed Naturopath. I have a question for you guys.
Should I continue taking the birth control pills along with the herbal and Chinese medicines or should I stop the birth control pills and just take the natural remedies? I began the pill in late August and if actually feels as if one of my cyst has grown larger since then. I also have some breast tenderness. A lot of people say that birth control pills are “toxic” and if I’m going to do natural medicine, then I should just do that. What do you all think? Any advice would be much appreciated.
I don’t have any children.
